WEEK ONE: Storytelling through Animation
AOC partnered with the Lafayette Reads Together (LRT) initiative, a community-wide reading program in partnership with the Lafayette Public Library! In this workshop, students learned and discussed the basic concepts of animation. They learned to give life and motion to characters through experimenting with the basic walk/run cycle.
Week two: Podcast 101
Students learned the basic skills and tools to produce their own podcasts! They covered helpful tips for brainstorming topic ideas, scripting an episode, and voice recording.
Week three: Voice Performance with Robin Small-McCarthy
Back by popular demand, New York Writer/Poet and Theater educator Robin Small-McCarthy returned to share her expertise on some effective voice techniques to deliver a convincing voice performance. Robin is a dynamic vocal coach and mentor who has dedicated the past 30+ years to teaching, directing and developing the performing arts in schools, universities, and community centers across the country.
Week 1: Cartoon Effects
In this session, students gained some new knowledge about popular photo editing tools and functions. They enjoyed putting their skills to the test creating cartoon-style portraits of their favorite celebrities using GIMP 2.0 program. Their newfound editing skills can be applied across any editing software!
WEEK 2: VOICE TECHNIQUES WITH ROBIN SMALL-MCCARTHY
In this session, students learned some essential tips and practice warm ups for delivering a solid voice acting performance. Activities were led by dynamic Voice and Performance Instructor Robin-Small McCarthy. Students took turns reading aloud their choice of monologues for the group and received constructive peer critique for each performance. The confidence among the group grew and grew with every performance. Great job, future voice actors!
WEEK 3: MUSIC AND SONG PRODUCTION
In this session, students learned the basic concepts of producing a rhythmic music track! They utilized the basic tools within Garageband audio recording software to compose their songs, and even had a little fun adding their own vocals and lyrics to it!
WEEK 4: INTRO TO VIDEO PRODUCTION
In this session, students learned the basics of camera shots and angles for producing powerful video shots. They got hands-on with AOC’s camera gear on a video scavenger hunt around the building!
WEEK 5: INTRO TO VIDEO EDITING
In this session, students learned a little about the history of editing in the film industry and its role in the video production process today. They utilized Final Cut Pro X editing software to produce their own creative video edits with fancy effects, transitions, and audio.
Week 6: Free Speech Week!
In this session, students learned about the basic rights, protections, and limitations of freedom of speech in the U.S. Students spent the afternoon discussing scenarios, and also expressing their ideas with some fun free speech key chain designing!
Week 7: Spooky Special Effects
In this session, students watched some behind-the-scenes clips to discover how special effects were used in their fave movies to evoke an audience’s emotion. Then, they utilized editing techniques within Final Cut Pro X to produce fun Halloween visual effects.
WEEK 8: MEDIA LITERACY WEEK
In this session, students examined some persuasive techniques used to create engaging media messaging. They discussed the ethics of photo and video manipulation in advertising and even put their own photo editing skills to work producing a flyer advertisement using Canva.
WEEK 9: CANDI-MATION
In this session, students got creative with some sweet treats. They practiced basic animation techniques and learned how to give life and movement to the tastiest prop: candy!
WEEK 10: KIDS WHO CODE
In this session, students participated in the National Hour of Code, which takes place each year during National Computer Science Week. They learned some fundamental tips and tricks by building code with online games!
