Video Editing:

what makes a great video editor?

In this video, Editor/Creator Justin Odisho shares five handy skills that make for successful video editing:

Here’s a quick recap of helpful skills that will improve your video editing:

GOOD STORYTELLING SKILLS - The more effective and communicative you become with telling stories, the better your video communication skills will become.

BEING A GOOD SCULPTOR AND KNOWING WHAT TO TAKE AWAY - You will need to exercise some strategic decision-making when deciding what clips to include or not include in your final project.

BEING A GOOD VISUALIZER - Can you close your eyes and visualize what you want your final project will look like? Beginning with your end goal in mind will help you conceptualize your story in FCPX.

KNOW YOUR TECH AND TOOLS - Being proficient with the tools you have available will lessen the stress and headache of making lots of user errors.

GOOD PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS - ‘What should I do when I get an error rendering message?’; ‘How do I fix a video clip that’s too dark?’; ‘How can I shorten my video from 5 minutes to 30 seconds without losing the story I want to tell?’ These are very likely questions you will run into during your editing journey. Having good problem solving skills will result in a much smoother editing experience.
