Barricades Placed on Roads in Preparation for Krewe of Rio Parade, Mardi Gras

Times and locations of installation and removal announced.
 

As Mardi Gras approaches, Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) reminds businesses, residents and travelers in the City of Lafayette that Public Works will begin placing barricades along the parade route this Thursday, Feb. 21 at 8 a.m. and again on Friday, Feb. 22 at 8 a.m. Barricades will be placed to allow for “turning lanes” and major cross-overs along Johnston St. and N. College Rd. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes when possible, allow extra time to get to their destinations and exercise additional caution and patience while crews are on the roadways.

 

The City of Lafayette barricade placement and parade schedule for Feb. 21-23 is as follows:

·       Thursday, Feb. 21, 8 a.m. – Public Works crews will commence placing barricades at the start of the parade route (Downtown area), beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route to the intersection of Johnston and Vermilion Streets.

 

·       Friday, Feb. 22, 8 a.m. – Public Works crews will resume placing barricades from the intersection of Johnston and Vermilion Streets along the parade route to the intersection of Johnston St. and N. College Rd., near the Albertson’s shopping center, then along N. College Rd. to Cajun Field at Gate 1 at Reinhardt Dr., headed towards Congress St. 

·       Saturday, Feb. 23, 6:30 p.m. - The Krewe of Carnival en Rio Parade is scheduled to roll beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route before turning into Cajun Field at Gate 1. Public Works crews will immediately follow the last float, moving barricades to the sides of the roads and cleaning up litter and debris along the entire parade route.

 

The Lafayette Police Department will close all streets on and around the parade route one hour before the parades begin. All streets will remain closed until the completion of the last parade. No streets will be open until all citizens have been removed from the area and vehicles are able to travel safely. Public Works crews will follow the last float of the parade, cleaning up litter and debris along the entire parade route.

 

Public Works will follow a similar barricade placement schedule starting again on Feb. 28 for the parades leading up to and including Mardi Gras day:

 

·       Thursday, Feb. 28, 8 a.m. – Public Works crews will commence placing barricades at the start of the parade route beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route to the intersection of Johnston and Vermilion Streets.

 

·       Friday, Mar. 1, 5 a.m. – Public Works crews will place barricades to reduce driving lanes along the parade route at the following intersections:

o   Bertrand and Reinhardt Drives

o   Johnston Street at S. College Road in front of Twins

o   S. College Road at Johnston Street on the side of Exxon

o   Johnston Street at Cajundome Boulevard

o   Johnston and Clinton Streets

·       Friday, Mar. 1, 8 a.m. – Public Works crews will resume placing barricades from the intersection of Johnston and Vermilion Streets along the parade route to the intersection of Johnston St. and N. College Rd., near the Albertson’s shopping center, then along N. College Rd. to Cajun Field at Gate 1 at Reinhardt Dr., headed towards Congress St. 

·       Saturday, Mar. 2, 12:30 p.m. – The Children’s Parade is scheduled to roll from the intersection of Lafayette and W. Vermilion Streets to Cajundome Blvd. 

·       Saturday, Mar. 2, 6:30 p.m. – Krewe of Bonaparte Mardi Gras Parade is scheduled to roll beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route before turning into Cajun Field at Gate 1. Public Works crews will immediately follow the last float, cleaning up litter and debris along the entire parade route. Public Works crews will NOT move the barricades to the sides of the roads and the barricades will remain in place

·       Monday, Mar. 4, 6 p.m. – Queen Evangeline’s Parade is scheduled to roll beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route before turning into Cajun Field at Gate 1.

·       Tuesday, Mar. 5, MARDI GRAS DAY – All streets on and around the parade route will be closed one hour before the parades begin and will remain closed until the completion of the last parade. No streets will be open until all citizens have been removed from the area and vehicles are able to travel safely.

o   10 a.m. – King Gabriel’s Parade is scheduled to roll beginning at the intersection of Simcoe and Surrey Streets, then along the parade route before turning into Cajun Field at Gate 1.

o   1 p.m. – The Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival Parade is scheduled to roll following King Gabriel’s Parade.

o   2:30 p.m. – The TownSquare Media Independent Parade is scheduled to roll following the Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival Parade.

o   Immediately following the last float of the last parade, Public Works crews will remove the barricades at all intersections.

o   11 p.m. until, Public Works crews will move all remaining barricades to the sides of the roads and clean up litter and debris along the entire parade route. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes when possible, allow extra time to get to their destinations and exercise additional caution and patience while cleanup crews and public safety officers are on the roadways.

 

Handicap Viewing – The Lafayette Police Command Post at the corner of St. Julien and Johnston Streets, in front of Fire Station #5 is designated as handicap viewing.

The City of Lafayette barricade placement and parade schedule for March 6-8 is as follows:

 

·       Wednesday, Mar. 6 – Public Works crews will not be working on the roadways. 

·       Thursday, Mar. 7 and Friday, Mar. 8, 7 a.m. – Public Works crews will remove barricades from the Mardi Gras route and return them to the Public Works yard on Dorset Ave.

 

Other information about the parade route and Public Works operations during the Mardi Gras season:

 

·       The parade route is 3.9 miles in length

·       Public Works places approximately 5,500 barricades along the parade route and adjacent areas for crowd control and safety reasons

·       Public Works utilizes eight 30-yard roll-off dumpsters for trash and debris disposal

·       Public Works utilizes 122 portable toilets that are placed along the parade route
