AOC Celebrates Media Literacy Week November 5-9, 2018

AOC partners with local schools to celebrate Media Literacy Week Nov. 5-9

AOC Hosts Open House for Educators on Thursday, November 8

AOC Community Media will teach free media literacy workshops in various Lafayette Parish schools to celebrate Media Literacy Week November 5-9, a nationally celebrated week that highlights the power of media literacy education and its essential role in education today. In addition to the workshops, AOC will host an open house for all educators as well as AOC members, potential members, students and parents on Thursday, November 8th at 6pm. The open house will include a tour of the facility, breakout sessions on media related topics, refreshments and door prize giveaways. AOC Community Media is located inside the Rosa Parks Transportation Center on 101 Jefferson Street in Lafayette.

“AOC’s mission is to build an informed and engaged community through media, technology and education. Media literacy goes hand-in-hand with our goals to educate students in Lafayette parish to develop an understanding and appreciation of media in all forms, i.e., print, video, internet,” said Ed Bowie, AOC Executive Director. “Students who participate in the AOC media literacy program will have a much better grasp of the role of media in society. We welcome all individuals interested in learning more about AOC to attend the open house on November 8th.”

Because technology plays such a large role in media literacy in 2018, the partnership between AOC and Lafayette Parish School System is a natural one.

“LPSS encourages effective technology integration that creates safe learning environments that are authentic, innovative, and challenging for each student,” said LaShona Dickerson, LPSS Technology Director.

Randy Bernard, LPSS Academic Specialist adds, “Partnerships such as this allow us to greatly enrich the lives of our students by creating that authentic and relevant learning opportunity.”

AOC will present media literacy education in the month of November to students from first grade through 9th grade at the following schools: Woodvale Elementary, Myrtle Place Elementary, LJ Alleman Middle, and Lafayette High School.

AOC Community Media is also hosting three workshops this week: Simple Field Production, Simple Studio Production and On-Air Talent Training. For more information or to register for these workshops, please visit their website at www.aocinc.org.
